A cookbook review for you

A quick cookbook review for a little change of pace…
I think I may start a category, since I have quite a few cookbooks and there are a gazillion on the market to choose from.
The basic Betty Crocker cookbook was the first one I ever had. It’s been VERY well-used and well-loved over the years. The pages of my Betty Crocker cookbook are worn, torn, stained, and spotted.
Pros: Betty Crocker has the most basic recipes in it. If you don’t even know how to make pancakes, turn to Betty. If you don’t know how long to bake potatoes, Betty can tell ya. When your pot roast doesn’t come out well, ask Betty what you did wrong. When it comes to the basic, old-fashioned, do-it-from-scratch foods, Betty is the answer. There are also a wide variety of Betty Crocker books, but the basic is the one I am referring to here.
Cons: My Betty Crocker cookbook is in a 3-ring binder, which makes for easy tearing of the holes in the pages. It’s also large and a little awkward in a cluttered kitchen. As I mentioned, mine is torn and stained with forgotten grease spots. Betty also has little regard for health - very few whole grain, low-fat foods here. Of course, the copy I have is 17 years old and maybe there is an updated, more health-conscious version out now.
Conclusion: If you are a beginner cook (newlywed or just moved away from home) this is a GREAT starter cookbook. It also makes a super bridal shower or wedding gift. If you’ve got the basics down, move on to something more adventurous.
