Easy French Toast

When I was a kid, my mom made French toast by dipping a slice of Wonder bread into an egg / milk mixture and frying in butter. We lapped it up like it was candy. Since then, I’ve learned that a couple of changes were all that was needed to make really great French toast.
Real French Toast
Prep. time: 5 minutes / cooking time: 10 minutes
1 loaf of French bread
5 eggs
1 c. milk
2 T. vanilla
4 T. butter
1/4 t. cinnamon — optional
powdered sugar
maple syrup
Slice that bread nice and thick, so the eggs don’t soak all the way to the center. Beat the eggs, milk, and vanilla as well as you can. Just put one Tablespoon of butter in the hot skillet at a time. Dip the bread into the egg mixture and slap it into the pan. Flip after a couple of minutes and let the other side brown. Let the kids top it with the powdered sugar and syrup. The egg whites sink to the bottom of the bowl, so when the egg mixture is about halfway used up, add more milk and beat it again.
The key to good French toast is actually using French bread. Don’t bother doing it any other way.
