German Slush

This is a recipe that Mom used to make for the holidays, once we kids were a little older. Dad had a little fun trying to see how much of this his sons-in-law would drink. I think my sisters can all attest to this. I can remember one particularly uncomfortable Christmas morning that was a direct result of Pat accepting a few too many German Slushes from my dad. A lot of German Slush makes for a very festive Christmas Eve and a very unpleasant Christmas morning. Now that we are older and wiser, I think we can handle having some German Slush in the freezer.
For some reason, I thought about German Slush last week and did a quick Google search for the recipe. I learned a bit about German politics and the mishandling of their slush fund, but no recipes for this fruity drink. So I emailed my mother and she dug up the old recipe so I could make a little for ourselves over Thanksgiving and Christmas. It makes quite a bit, so I cut it in half — we are not heavy drinkers at all, and I don’t want to have it hiding in the back of the freezer for two years.
German Slush
(the small recipe)
3 1/2 c. water
1 c. sugar
1 c. boiling water
1 teabag
1/2 of a 12 oz. can of orange juice concentrate
1/2 of a 12 oz. can of lemonade concentrate
1 c. whiskey (I used Jack Daniels, Dad used to use Black Velvet)
Combine the sugar and water in a pan on the stove, heat until the sugar dissolves. Set that aside to cool. Use the boiling water and teabag to make tea, set that aside to cool. Then combine the two. Next add both concentrates and the whiskey. Stir this all together and put in a bowl or some other container with a lid and freeze it.
Whenever you feel like having a little, scoop some of this into a tumbler and add some 7-up or Sprite. It will never freeze completely solid because of the alcohol content. You can make it as strong or weak as you like with the soda.
When the relatives are a little too much or you just want to relax, have two.
