Declare it Kids Cooking Day
Today I offer you inspiration to let your kids into the kitchen.
Teach them that cooking amounts to more than opening a package, zapping it in the microwave, and eating in front of the TV.
Below are links to just a few of the things I would (and do!) trust my kids to make on their own:
Roast Beef Subs
Chili and Cornbread
Pot Roast
Salmon Patties
Spritz cookies
French Toast
Kitchen skills are useful for all people on this planet and we do our children a disservice by letting them entertain themselves while we cook. Oh, sure, I like to work alone in the kitchen and I often do (maybe too often) but I see the value in letting them in to cook, too. What’s to become of them when they move out if I never let them cook? They’ll be eating boxed macaroni until they get motivated enough to teach themselves, that’s what.
Pigs In a Blanket
This is one that my kids make for lunch frequently. Here’s what you need:
hot dogs
soft bread - 1 slice per hot dog
American cheese - 1 slice per hot dog
butter or margarine
toothpicks
I realize this is not gourmet food here, but kids get a real sense of accomplishment when you can let them do everything themselves and this is one of those things!
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place the bread on a cooking sheetLay the cheese on top, then the hot dog on top of that. Pull two opposite corners of the bread up to meet at the center of the hot dog. Secure the bread in place with toothpicks.
Bake your piggies at 375 for about 10 minutes, until the bread starts to toast on the bottom. Cooking times will vary with the kind of pan you use, so keep an eye on them. — Yes, I do let the kids heat the oven, put things in it, and take things out of it.
