The Elvis Sandwich
It’s true, folks, this is a real food. Supposedly, Elvis himself loved these sandwiches and ate them frequently. Do your own research - I have done a little investigating but since I’m not sure what’s true and what’s invented on the internet, I will let you check it out and decide for yourselves.
The Elvis is no doubt the most elaborate peanut butter sandwich ever invented.
By the way, our family once had a peanut butter sandwich contest. Everyone invented their own concoction, we had tasting, voting, the whole works. It was a really fun way to spend a family, otherwise boring, Saturday afternoon. We had top-secret trips to the grocery, private time in the kitchen, lots of giggling, and not-too-much gagging.
I learned about Elvis sandwiches several years ago on a travel show on PBS. The host of the show was traveling all over the United States learning (and tasting) about different local specialty sandwiches and their histories.
The Elvis was one of the most interesting tidbits on the show. (There were many, this is one of those shows I wish I had a recording of.) A young man in New York City gained notariety at his college for making great sandwiches. After graduating, he opened a specialty sandwich shoppe and had great success. One of the most popular items on his menu is the Elvis.
The ingredients in this sandwich are ones I would never have thought to put together. I probably wouldn’t have ever tried it if it weren’t for the urging of other family members.
So check it out guys, husbands who are stuck with the cooking, college students, you don’t want to miss this one… Buying ready-to-eat bacon will make this recipe super-easy.
The Elvis Peanut Butter Sandwich
makes one
2 slices of bread
butter
peanut butter
3 slices of bacon
1/2 banana
honey
Basically, this is made like a grilled cheese sandwich and if you know what that means, you can probably stop reading this post now.
If you have bought uncooked bacon, start by frying that the usual way and draining it.
Heat a clean skillet on medium heat. Assemble everything — slice the banana lengthwise so it will fit on the bread. Cut the bacon to fit, and have the peanut butter and honey handy.
Butter one side of each piece of bread. Next, place one of these butter-side-down into the pan. Quickly drizzle some honey on it, then place the banana and bacon on top. Spread the peanut butter on the other slice of bread and lay it down, butter side up. Check the bottom and flip when it turns golden brown. When the second side is brown, remove and eat.
Although the combination seems weird, it makes sense that the peanut butter and the salty bacon would go well together. Adding the banana and honey gives it a sweetness that truly finishes this sandwich off. I wonder if Elvis liked trail mix?
Enjoy!
